Professional Training

The Child Therapy Institute of Marin offers comprehensive training for MFT or LCSW interns as well as licensed clinicians. The training program focuses on the following topics related to individual child therapy: play therapy, sandplay therapy, working with parents and other agencies, and integrating expressive arts therapy into the treatment. The training also focuses on translating session material into MediCal friendly language and integrating CBT and dyadic therapy as needed.

We are currently seeking an MFT or LCSW intern to see clients, mostly ages 4-12 in our Albany and Antioch offices. The internship is a 2 – year commitment from September 2012 to August 2014.

Trainings and supervision take place in our San Rafael office. The interns are split into two groups, first year and second year. There are usually 2 -4 people in each group. Groups meet separately for group supervision on Thursdays from 10:00 – noon. Then the entire staff meets for staff meeting noon – 1:00. Friday trainings involve all interns and take place from 10:00 – noon in San Rafael. Trainings are provided primarily by Brian Lukas, PhD, Kathy Buys, MFT, and Nancy Jacobs, LCSW. Teaching members of ISST offer trainings each year to deepen the intern’s understanding of sandplay, working with diversity issues, and working within the therapeutic relationship.

  • Applicants need the following qualifications:
  •  In possession of an intern number as of September 2011.
  •  Self-starter and flexible
  • Able to drive to San Rafael 2x a week, Thursdays 10 – 1 and Fridays 10- 12
  • Able to work 10-15 hours a week without pay.

This is an excellent opportunity for those wanting to develop a child therapy specialty and wanting to start a private practice in the Albany area. Please send resumes to Kathy Buys, MFT at beautifulinstrument@yahoo.com.
